Sunday Funnies: 09-12-2021

Sunday Funnies is on sabbatical. How long depends on how long it takes me to come up with something new. Anything new. Got totally pulled back into music last week and got very little artwork done. And I've run out of old stuff to recycle. So I'm using a quick carrot this time ... but next time I'll use the stick (in the form of a drawing pen). Are there blue carrots? There's blue corn. Actually, this one looks sorta green. Have a great, safe and healthy week and may all sentient beings know peace, love and joy.

Sunday Sketches: Mexico Trip, 1987

In 1987, Beverly and I took a trip to Cancun, Yucatan, Mexico. Beverly was a veteran Mexico traveler. It was my first trip to mainland Mexico and I loved it. Herewith the few sketches I managed to do there. Wish I had done more. I hope you enjoy these!

1. We took a ferry from Puerto Juarez to Isla Mujeres and stayed at El Presidente hotel, which was located on a spit of sand east of the north beach.  The next year, 1988, the hotel was totally destroyed by Hurricane Gilbert. It has never been restored because of the frequency of hurricanes on that coast.

2. The swimming pool at El Presidente, where a pair of frigate birds fighting over a fish dropped their prey into the pool next to Beverly with a loud "Splat!". Some text from my journal is included:

3. A very hasty sketch I did from memory of one of the huts we saw on a bus trip to Chichen-Itza. That simple bus ride (and other travels) opened my eyes to how dramatically different from our lives in the United States much of the world. To hear about that is one thing, to see it, another.

More photos of the ruins of El Presidente are here: http://www.earthdancer.org/MPix/ElPres.html

Thanks and have a great week!

Sunday Funnies, 07-18-2021: Caption Contest Winners!

I'm taking a day off today for a special event. But I do have the winners of last week's caption contest: Peter Margolies and Beverly Byrd Loomis ("What's for dinner?"). Can't give the prize to my spouse, that'd be nepotism, so Pete's the winner. Have a great week!:

Saturday's Child: Don't Take The Big Trees by Bob Loomis

I wrote this song in 1997 after listening on KPFA-FM Radio to the hearings in Oakland about redwood logging in the Scotia CA area by a corporation that had purchased the longtime sustainable Louisiana Pacific business and intended to clearcut the area. It's one of my few protest songs. That battle was won, sort of, but there are still attempts being made to take the old trees. I hope you like the song. Copyright Robert Loomis, all rights reserved. If interested in putting this song in your repertoire, contact me at: miltloomis(at)yahoo.com Thanks!

Sunday Funnies, 07-04-2021

It's funny, but I have very mixed feelings about this holiday.  When I was a kid of course, I loved fireworks, especially the big packs of little firecrackers we'd get with the help of adults.  But as an adult and a reporter I covered quite a few stories of folks who blew off fingers, hands, feet, etc., while setting off fireworks. Plus, I've seen how the M80 and M100 and other explosions make pets tremble with fear. Of course, they remind me of war. IMHO we've had enough wars. But this holiday also commemorates what has been so far the greatest experiment in democracy in the history of Western civilization. So in that sense, I join in the celebration and pray that we are able to continue that worthy effort.

A few efforts in old notebooks from back when I was trying to emulate Japanese brush painting with markers, circa 1991 or so. With apologies to the real brush masters.

Sunday Funnies, 04-18-2021

Taking a day off today, just posting this scene I sketched of a sweet March 31 afternoon playing flutes and whistle on the back deck with our late, great cat Stumpy meatloafing in the sun. Needs "colorizing" but I'm too lazy to do it right now. Have a great Sunday!
